Inhibition of temporary pacing by a mobile phone.

A patient with no underlying rhythm was receiving transvenous temporary pacing from an external pulse generator and bipolar temporary pacing wire on a coronary care unit.

While examining the patient, the consultant cardiologist was telephoned on his mobile phone, carried in his jacket pocket. The electromagnetic interference generated by the ringing mobile phone caused inappropriate sensing by the pulse generator and inhibition of ventricular pacing. The image shows the resultant 2.5 second pause. Pacing recommenced when the mobile phone was moved away from the bedside.

This case is a reminder that mobile phones may adversely affect electronic hospital equipment.
